CAMEL RACING:

The traditional sport of  camel racing is most memorable highlights of any visit to Dubai.

Camel jockeys in the past were young boys between the ages of 6 and 7, weighing approx. 20 kg so as not to weigh down the camel.

After international pressure from human rights groups, the law now prevents children riding camels in races. In their place robotic jockeys have been tested and are in use. The operators follow the race in four wheel drive vehicles while directing the robot jockey’s movements with a remote control.

Currently, there are approx. 14000 active racing camels in the UAE, which require large number of people to maintain them and keep them on top condition.

Races take place during winter months, usually on Thursday and Friday mornings, at tracks in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. They start very early (by about 07.30) and are usually over by 08.30-Admission is FREE!
